Tank volume is the total capacity of a storage container, measured in liters (L), gallons (gal), or cubic meters (m³). Tanks come in four common configurations:
- Vertical cylinder — upright round tanks (water towers, silos)
- Horizontal cylinder — tanks lying on their side (fuel tanks, propane tanks)
- Rectangular — box-shaped tanks (aquariums, cisterns)
- Elliptical — oval cross-section tanks (tanker trucks)
