Density (ρ) = Mass (m) ÷ Volume (V). This fundamental formula relates three physical properties of any substance. Given any two, you can calculate the third:
- Volume = Mass ÷ Density (V = m/ρ)
- Mass = Density × Volume (m = ρ × V)
- Density = Mass ÷ Volume (ρ = m/V)
Density is measured in kg/m³, g/cm³, or lb/ft³. Water has a density of 1 g/cm³ = 1,000 kg/m³ = 62.43 lb/ft³.
