What is Area to Volume Conversion?

Converting area to volume adds a third dimension (depth, height, or thickness) to a 2D surface measurement. The formula is simply: Volume = Area × Depth.

This is used for: spreading mulch or gravel over a garden, pouring concrete over a pad, applying asphalt to a road, calculating paint volume for a wall (area × coating thickness), and filling raised beds.

Formula

How to Convert Area to Volume

Volume = Area × Depth (or Height or Thickness).

Ensure units are consistent: if area is in square feet and depth in inches, convert depth to feet first (inches ÷ 12).

Example: 200 sq ft of garden × 3 inches of mulch:

V = 200 × (3/12) = 200 × 0.25 = 50 ft³ ÷ 27 = 1.85 cubic yards of mulch.

Examples

Worked Examples

Concrete Patio

150 sq ft × 4" thick: V = 150 × 0.333 = 50 ft³ = 1.85 yd³.

Mulch for Garden

500 sq ft × 3" deep: V = 500 × 0.25 = 125 ft³ = 4.63 yd³.

Gravel Driveway

1,000 sq ft × 6" deep: V = 1,000 × 0.5 = 500 ft³ = 18.52 yd³.

Paint Volume

400 sq ft wall × 0.004" (1 coat): V = 400 × 0.000333 ft = 0.133 ft³ = 1 gallon.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about the area to volume calculator.

Multiply square feet by the depth in feet: ft³ = ft² × depth (ft). If depth is in inches, divide by 12 first. Example: 100 sq ft × 6 inches = 100 × 0.5 = 50 ft³.

m³ = m² × depth (m). If depth is in centimeters, divide by 100 first. Example: 20 m² × 10 cm = 20 × 0.1 = 2 m³.

Calculate area in sq ft, decide on depth (usually 2-4 inches), then: ft³ = area × (depth ÷ 12). Divide by 27 for cubic yards. Most mulch is sold by the cubic yard.

Area (sq ft) × thickness (ft) = volume (ft³). Divide by 27 for cubic yards. A 4-inch slab: ft³ = area × 0.333. Add 10% waste factor. 1 yd³ of concrete ≈ 4,050 lbs.

Yes: Area = Volume ÷ Depth. If you have 5 yd³ of mulch and want 3" deep: Area = (5 × 27) ÷ 0.25 = 540 sq ft of coverage.
