What is Surfboard Volume?

Surfboard volume, measured in liters (L), describes how much flotation and paddle power a board provides. Higher volume = more buoyancy = easier paddling and wave catching. Lower volume = more responsiveness and maneuverability.

Modern surfboard shapers measure volume precisely using 3D scanning (AKU Shaper, Board CAD). As a rough estimate, volume β‰ˆ Length Γ— Width Γ— Thickness Γ— a shape factor (typically 0.35-0.42 for most boards).

Formula

How to Calculate Surfboard Volume

Estimated volume = Length Γ— Width Γ— Thickness Γ— Shape Factor.

Typical shape factors: Shortboard ~0.35, Fish ~0.38, Funboard ~0.40, Longboard ~0.42.

Measurements in inches β†’ multiply by 16.387 for cmΒ³ β†’ divide by 1,000 for liters.

Example: Shortboard 6'0" Γ— 19" Γ— 2.5": V β‰ˆ 72 Γ— 19 Γ— 2.5 Γ— 0.35 = 1,197 inΒ³ Γ— 0.01639 β‰ˆ 19.6 liters.

Rider weight guide: Beginner: body weight (kg) Γ— 0.6-0.8. Intermediate: Γ— 0.4-0.5. Advanced: Γ— 0.34-0.4. Pro: Γ— 0.30-0.34.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about the surfboard volume calculator.

Beginner: body weight (kg) Γ— 0.6-0.8. Intermediate: Γ— 0.4-0.5. Advanced: Γ— 0.35-0.4. A 75 kg beginner should look for 45-60 L. An advanced 75 kg surfer: 26-30 L.

Yes β€” volume is the most important sizing metric. Too little volume: you sink, can't paddle, miss waves. Too much volume: the board feels sluggish and hard to duck dive. Get the right volume for your weight and skill level.

Modern boards have volume printed on them (e.g., "28.5L"). For older boards, use the calculator above or weigh the board in water using Archimedes' principle (displacement method).

The shape factor accounts for the board's outline, rocker, and concaves. Thinner, more performance-oriented boards have lower factors (~0.35). Fuller, more buoyant shapes have higher factors (~0.42).

When in doubt, go slightly higher. Extra volume helps you catch more waves and have more fun. You can always step down in volume as your skills improve.
