What is a Hemisphere?

A hemisphere is exactly half of a sphere, created by cutting a sphere along a great circle (a plane through the center). It has one curved surface and one flat circular base.

Hemispheres appear as bowls, domes, igloos, and satellite dishes. The curved surface area equals 2πr² and the flat base has area πr².

Formula

How to Calculate Hemisphere Volume

Hemisphere volume = (2/3) × π × r³ (V = (2/3)πr³).

This is exactly half the sphere formula (4/3)πr³ ÷ 2 = (2/3)πr³.

Example: r = 8 cm: V = (2/3) × π × 512 = 1,072.33 cm³ = 1.072 L.

Examples

Worked Examples

Cereal Bowl

Inner radius 7 cm: V = (2/3)π×343 = 718.38 cm³ = 0.718 L ≈ 3 US cups.

Geodesic Dome

Radius 5 m: V = (2/3)π×125 = 261.8 m³ = 261,799 L.

Igloo

Interior radius 1.5 m: V = (2/3)π×3.375 = 7.07 m³ of interior space.

Salad Bowl

Inner radius 12 cm: V = (2/3)π×1728 = 3,619.1 cm³ = 3.62 L.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about the hemisphere volume calculator.

V = (2/3)πr³. This equals exactly half the volume of a full sphere with the same radius.

Total SA = 3πr² = curved surface (2πr²) + flat base (πr²).

A bowl approximates a hemisphere. Measure the inner radius at the rim and use V = (2/3)πr³. For a shallow bowl, treat it as a spherical cap instead.

Divide diameter by 2 to get radius, then use V = (2/3)πr³. A 20 cm diameter hemisphere: r = 10 cm, V = (2/3)π×1000 = 2,094.4 cm³.

A hemisphere is a mathematically perfect half-sphere. A dome may be hemispherical or have other curvatures (parabolic, catenary, onion-shaped). Use the hemisphere formula only for true half-sphere domes.
