What is a Cube?

A cube is a three-dimensional solid bounded by six identical square faces. Every edge has the same length, every angle is 90°, and all faces are congruent. The cube is one of the five Platonic solids and the most common shape in daily life — dice, sugar cubes, ice cubes, and Rubik's Cubes are all cubes.

The cube is also called a regular hexahedron or a square prism with equal length, width, and height. When the side length is a, the cube has 12 edges of length a, 8 vertices, and 6 faces each with area .

Formula

How to Calculate Cube Volume

The volume of a cube equals the side length cubed: V = a³.

This is the simplest volume formula — only one measurement is needed. If a cube has a side length of 5 cm:

V = 5³ = 5 × 5 × 5 = 125 cm³

To convert: 125 cm³ = 0.125 liters (L) = 0.000125 m³ = 7.627 in³ = 0.033 US gallons.

The surface area of a cube is SA = 6a². For a 5 cm cube: SA = 6 × 25 = 150 cm².

Examples

Worked Examples

Rubik's Cube

A standard Rubik's Cube has a side length of 5.7 cm. V = 5.7³ = 185.19 cm³ (0.185 L).

Ice Cube

A typical ice cube tray makes 3 cm cubes. V = 3³ = 27 cm³ (27 mL = 0.91 fl oz).

Shipping Box

A 30 cm cubic box: V = 30³ = 27,000 cm³ = 27 liters = 0.953 ft³.

Room (1m cube)

A 1-meter cube: V = 1³ = 1 m³ = 1,000 L = 264.17 US gallons = 35.31 ft³.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about the cube volume calculator.

V = a³ (side length cubed). If a = 4 cm, then V = 4³ = 64 cm³. This is the simplest 3D volume formula — only one measurement is needed because all sides are equal.

A 10 cm cube has volume V = 10³ = 1,000 cm³. Since 1 liter = 1,000 cm³, a 10 cm cube holds exactly 1 liter (L) = 0.264 US gallons.

A cube has 6 identical square faces (all edges equal). A cuboid (rectangular prism) has 6 rectangular faces where length, width, and height can differ. A cube is a special case of a cuboid where l = w = h.

Take the cube root of the volume: a = ∛V. For example, if V = 64 cm³, then a = ∛64 = 4 cm.

SA:V = 6/a. A 1 cm cube has SA:V = 6. A 10 cm cube has SA:V = 0.6. Smaller cubes have higher ratios, meaning more surface per unit of enclosed space.
